Nerd Night: Mon 7 Apr 2014

Happy Birthday to us!

It’s the second anniversary of our inaugural public meeting.  Twenty-four months of fascinating people, pastimes, passions and professions.  Thank you one and all.

This month will be a casual (even more casual?) meeting but will involve cake and candles!

Please bring along any exciting new toys, gadgets and tools — or even a new skill — and tell us all about it.

If you know any crafters, makers or creatives, please invite them along.  Everyone’s welcome; the more the merrier.  Pls Note however, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

It’s FREE.  Kick off is at 7:30pm.  Find us upstairs at The Albion, next to the Town Church.

What a fantastic evening!  Such a privilege to have Alex from SPARK! with us.  It’s true to say that our ’5 minute talk’ was a little ..er.. loose… however everybody had questions and comment to make regarding SPARK! and the lighting controller that Paul and Marcel had been working on.  Thanks to everyone for your supportive feedback.

The Break Out time at the end for free discussion proved a very fertile time too!  Just how it should be  :)

Thanks also to Keith for bringing along a scavenger box of goodies and André for demonstrating his RGB pixel strip array.

Alex Tustin — SPARK!

Alex Tustin — SPARK!

STOP PRESS

You may have heard about the rupture in the time/space continuum on Saturday night?  Street theatre drumming group SPARK! created the rift so we have the privilege of welcoming one for the group’s founders, Alex Tustin, to Nerd Night to explain the phenomenon!

Alex’s role, besides drumming of course, includes the ‘making of things’ — creating the physical bits that allows SPARK! to do what they do.  Along the way he’s learning all the technical wizardry that propels their stunning light show.

SPARK!

ALSO — our very own Paul Dodd will be presenting the lighting control system that he created for the fish lanterns at the event… which fell foul of time constraints at the hands of Marcel!  Come find out why.   ;)

There’ll also be our usual ‘Shout Out’ slot if you want to tell us about something you’re working on or need help with a project.  And ‘Break Out’ when you can simply chat to nerds from all walks and play with any toys that may have been brought along.

Nerd Night: Mon 3 Feb 2014

Learn to Solder

Nerd Night takes a slight deviation tonight — instead of having speakers we shall be soldering.  Anyone can learn.  It’s not so hard.  Being shown is the biggest hurdle for most people.

Soldering Iron

If you’ve got a soldering iron (preferably with a stand) bring it along.  There will be a few to try out.  We’ll split up into small groups and have a play.

In case you’re wondering what we’ll be soldering, if we’re ready in time we’ll have some of our wireless lantern projects to start building!

We’ll include some of our usual ‘features’ like; Shout Out but we’ll mostly be hands-on.

If you know any crafters, makers or creatives, please invite them along.  Everyone’s welcome; the more the merrier.  Pls Note however, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

REVIEW: Mon 2 Dec

What a super evening.  Once again there was lots of lively contribution from everyone — which makes everything delightfully stimulating!  Big thanks to Antonia and Jo for presenting and everyone who brought things in to show and tell — particularly Marc with his Low Temperature Stirling Engine.

Jo also highlighted the Big Geekend™  24-25th May 2014.  Please consider what you could bring to the event!

Marcel flagged up the Lantern Parade on 1st March 2014.  Should be a splendid spectacle.  If anyone would like to join the ‘working party’ on radio controlling 200+ lanterns and if you have any ideas for Herm’s involvement, please shout.

SO sorry for the late posting!  Life is manic at the moment.

Nerd Night is on and we are excited to welcome;

1) Antonia Ramsay
Antonia’s art practice involves working with pre-existing toys as a way of examining today’s society. Psychological theories, especially those surrounding play and infant development strongly influence her work, for Antonia research is as integral as making.

2) Jo Dowding
Jo from Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery, will be sharing work that is being done on making paintings accessible to the visually impaired.  Maybe some local 3D printing buffs would like to get involved here?  See http://www.vrvis.at/projects/tactile-paintings

There’ll be our Shout Out and all the usual creative banter.
