REVIEW: 5 May 2014

A wonderful evening with Geraldine and Clive Silk — full of lively discussion from ranging from threats to bees and methods of monitoring bee activity in the hive to alternative hive designs.  It will certainly be a subject we keep coming back to.

By way of update on the ‘Sega Rally’ games machine at Styx, apparently the motherboard has gone so it would seem that it’ll not be Imagesuch an easy fix.  Whoever wants to come visit the machine for some exploratory diagnosis work please drop Marcel a line.  Wednesday evenings are best as that is when their ‘Quiet Club’ meets — the members of which we want to involve.

Nerd Night: Mon 5 May 2014

After enjoying the birthday cake of last month’s Nerd Night…mmm... cake!

…we continue the food-y theme and welcome Geraldine and Clive Silk to talk about Beekeeping!

We all hear about how these little critters are in decline and how serious that is for the food-chain — so what of these industrious insects in Guernsey?  What can we do to help?  …and what does it take to be a beekeeper?

Bees

Please bring along any exciting new toys, gadgets and tools — or even a new skill — and tell us all about it.

If you know any crafters, makers or creatives, please invite them along.  Everyone’s welcome; the more the merrier.  Pls Note however, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

It’s FREE.  Kick off is at 7:30pm.  Find us upstairs at The Albion, next to the Town Church.

What a fantastic evening!  Such a privilege to have Alex from SPARK! with us.  It’s true to say that our ‘5 minute talk’ was a little ..er.. loose… however everybody had questions and comment to make regarding SPARK! and the lighting controller that Paul and Marcel had been working on.  Thanks to everyone for your supportive feedback.

The Break Out time at the end for free discussion proved a very fertile time too!  Just how it should be  :)

Thanks also to Keith for bringing along a scavenger box of goodies and André for demonstrating his RGB pixel strip array.

Alex Tustin — SPARK!

Alex Tustin — SPARK!

STOP PRESS

You may have heard about the rupture in the time/space continuum on Saturday night?  Street theatre drumming group SPARK! created the rift so we have the privilege of welcoming one for the group’s founders, Alex Tustin, to Nerd Night to explain the phenomenon!

Alex’s role, besides drumming of course, includes the ‘making of things’ — creating the physical bits that allows SPARK! to do what they do.  Along the way he’s learning all the technical wizardry that propels their stunning light show.

SPARK!

SPARK!

ALSO — our very own Paul Dodd will be presenting the lighting control system that he created for the fish lanterns at the event… which fell foul of time constraints at the hands of Marcel!  Come find out why.   ;)

There’ll also be our usual ‘Shout Out’ slot if you want to tell us about something you’re working on or need help with a project.  And ‘Break Out’ when you can simply chat to nerds from all walks and play with any toys that may have been brought along.
