Nerd Night: Mon 2 MAR 2015

It’s our 3rd birthday so it’s PARTY TIME!IMG_6604IMG_3547

Of course that means cake — and if you fancy baking a little something to bring and share we certainly won’t stop you!  ;P

Captain Spaulding

As if the promise of cake wasn’t enough, we’ve got artist Hugh Rose joining us.

He’ll be talking about the process of designing your own toy from scratch and all of the technical skills involved from sketch to blueprint, prototyping to moldmaking and finally from casting to finishing.

Diver Prototype

Hugh is busy preparing for ToyCon UK in Bethnal Green, London, where he will be releasing a new figure, tentatively entitled ‘Diver’.  ToyCon UK is Europe’s premier designer toy convention, a vibrant gathering of toy customisers, designers, retailers and producers.

Paul will be sharing his latest Round-Up of all things weird and wonderful from the maker world and Marcel will bring an update on the upcoming Lantern Parade from the Arts Commission.

Come, discover, share and discuss.

Everyone: welcome.  The more the merrier!

Under 18s:  also welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

Entry: FREE!

Dress-code: evening wear.

Venue: The Albion pub in St Peter Port.  Next to the Town Church.

Kick off: 7:30pm

PROJECT: Lights!

We made a start but due to the limited amount of time available and a good deal of discussion required to problem solve the installation on the various types of drum, we only got four done.

Now we know where we’re going it should be much quicker next week.  :D

PROJECT: Lights!

Calling one and all to join in lighting up the samba band.IMG_9461

Weds 25 Feb.  From 7:50pm at Le Murier School (to the left of St Sampsons’ High School)

Bring a soldering iron if you have one but don’t worry if you don’t.

We have 25 drums to light up with mostly two strips of lights each.  Many hands make light work and all that.

Bring earplugs if you have ‘em!  They’re a noisy bunch!  ;)

REVIEW: Mon 2 Feb 2015

IMG_9450Wow, what a cracking night!  The diversity of subjects discussed at a Nerd Night never ceases to amaze!  We ranged from rocket stoves to archery to flashing lights to brewing to hydroponics to virtual machines… you name it!

Thank you everyone for your contribution.  Next month is our third birthday!  See you there  :)IMG_9452 IMG_945114

Actually it IS Rocket Science!Fire

This month we have a guest speaker talking about his experiences with Rocket Stoves.

Never heard of them?  They are super efficient wood burners that make a lovely ‘rockety’ sound when they’re running.  They are used for heating (air, water, static mass) and cooking.  A number of folks have expressed an interest in the past so this is just what the doctor ordered.

It’s only the last Nerd Night of 2014!Adrian's Bike

There’s LOADS to talk about tonight…

Adrian Ritchie has just come back from 5 months of off-road motorcycling.  His talk “It’s An Adventure – Canada & USA 2014” is in two parts, 1) the extreme challenge of such a trip,  2) how it lead him to want to set up a Maker Space here in Guernsey!

Marcel is back from Manchester and will share a smidgin of what he’s been up to — both with the Body of Light dance and technology project and also exploring what’s making in Manchester.

Paul will be sharing his latest round-up of things going on in the maker world and we’ll have the usual Shout Out and Break Out times when you can share projects and request help.

Come, discover, discuss.
